A small-volume nebulizer uses a liquid medication and turns it into a mist that can be inhaled as a breathing treatment. A small-volume nebulizer is used for people with breathing difficulties, particularly asthma. A small-volume nebulizer varies in appearance as per the model and its manufacturing brand. However, all small-volume nebulizers consist of the following components:
1. Compressor nebulizer unit: The compressor unit is the central hub of the nebulizer device. It is connected to a power source and it drives the working of the device.
2. Mouthpiece/Aerosol Mask: A face mask or a mouthpiece are interchangeably used to get the breathing treatments. Medicine mist can be inhaled through a mask or a mouthpiece. When using a mask, ensure that it rightly fits the face without causing any gaps through which the air could seep out. Conversely, a mouthpiece can be held firmly between the teeth with the lips covering it completely.
3. Inhalation tubing: The tubing is connected from the compressor to the nebulizer cup. It carries pressurized air and liquid medicine that is converted to mist form.
4. Nebulizer cup: A nebulizer cup is a small unit where medicine is poured.
5. Nebulizer filters: The filters are considered an essential part of the nebulizer system. Before the pressurized air enters the medication cup, it is passed through the filters which helps remove dust particles from the air. It should be cleaned and replaced from time to time.
6. T-type connector: This type of connector is used to monitor in-line connections.
